Divide and Quantum is a free learning site. It does not sell personal data, does not run advertising, and does not track you across other websites. This page lists everything it stores about you, which is less than you might expect.
There is no user database
Signing in does not create a record of you anywhere. There is no accounts table, no profile, no stored password, and no history of what you read. When you sign in with Google, the site puts your email address and display name into a signed cookie in your own browser and reads them back from there. Sign out and nothing about you remains.
The one exception is the newsletter, and only if you deliberately ask for it.
Signing in with Google
Google tells us three things: your email address, whether Google has verified it, and your name. We never receive your Google password, and we request no access to Gmail, Drive, contacts, or anything else in your account. We use the address to know you are signed in, and the name to greet you. Neither is written to a database. If Google has not verified the address, we refuse the sign-in.
The newsletter
If you tick the newsletter box when signing in, or use the form on the home page, your email address is stored on a mailing list. It is double opt-in: the address stays unconfirmed and receives nothing but a single confirmation email until you click the link in it. Every newsletter has a one-click unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes you from the list. This list is the only place we keep your address.
Cookies
- dq_session keeps you signed in for 30 days. It holds your email address and display name, signed so it cannot be tampered with.
- dq_oauth exists for ten minutes during a Google sign-in to protect that exchange against forgery, then is deleted.
Both are strictly necessary for signing in, and there are no advertising or tracking cookies, so there is no cookie banner to click through. If analytics is enabled the site uses Plausible, which is cookieless and collects nothing personal.
Who else sees your data
- Google, when you choose to sign in with it.
- Microsoft Azure stores the newsletter list.
- Zyphr (delivering over AWS SES) sends the confirmation email.
- Vercel hosts the site and handles the requests your browser makes.
Nobody else. Nothing is sold, rented, or shared for advertising.
Getting rid of your data
To stop being signed in, sign out or clear your cookies; there is nothing on our side to delete. To leave the mailing list, use the unsubscribe link in any email, or write to hello@divideandquantum.com and we will remove you.
